Dermatology is a field of medicine concerned with health conditions affecting the skin, hair, nails, and membranes. At Brigent Specialty Pharmacy, patients diagnosed with dermatology conditions may obtain prescription medication.

Prevalence of Skin Conditions

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, 84.5 million people, or one in four people, are impacted by skin disease. Skin conditions cost the U.S. healthcare system $75 billion in medical, preventative, and prescription and non-prescription drug costs. One in three patients with a skin disease visit a dermatologist, who collaborates with other healthcare professionals.

Symptoms of Scalp Conditions

Scalp conditions can cause symptoms such as rashes, hair loss, hair thinning, weak hair and breakages, itchiness, scaly patches, pain, and tenderness. It’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Many treatments are only effective in the early stages of a scalp condition, such as hair loss.

About Nail Conditions

Healthy nails are smooth and have a consistent color. With age, patients may develop vertical ridges or brittle nails. This is typically harmless and spots due to injury should grow out with the nail.

Abnormalities such as spots, discoloration, and nail separation can be caused by injuries to the fingers and hands, infections (onychomycosis), viral warts (periungual warts), and some medications, such as those used in cancer treatment.

Certain medical conditions can also alter the appearance of fingernails. These changes can be difficult to interpret because fingernails’ appearance alone isn’t enough to provide a diagnosis. A doctor will evaluate the patient’s nails and other symptoms and conduct a physical exam to make an accurate diagnosis.
